A late-night question that still matters today
When Jesus said, "You must be born again," he spoke a truth that remains vital for every one of us.
The phrase comes from a late-night conversation with Nicodemus, a respected religious leader searching for answers. Jesus told him plainly, "Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
Nicodemus responded with confusion, asking, "How can anyone be born when he is old?"
Jesus explained that being born again isn't a second physical birth, but a spiritual one: "Whatever is born of flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of Spirit is spirit."
This challenge from Jesus is still for us today — and it challenged me personally.
I grew up attending church and believing in God. I knew Jesus was God's Son. Yet when I heard about "born-again believers," I was puzzled.
Wasn't simple belief enough? Why did I still feel something was missing?
Like Nicodemus, I was viewing life only from a natural perspective — trying to be the best version of myself, yet still restless inside.
In college, I met Wendy and her family, who lived their Christian faith with vibrant joy and authenticity. Their example awakened a longing in me. Eventually, Wendy became my wife and the mother of our six children.
But more importantly, through their lives and prayers, I discovered what it meant to be born again.
At creation, Adam and Eve enjoyed an open, intimate relationship with God. Yet by willful disobedience, they introduced sin and separation into the human story — a tragedy that has affected every person since.
Still, God's love never faltered. From the beginning, he planned a way to restore us. That restoration required the greatest sacrifice: the death and resurrection of his own Son, Jesus Christ.
God created us with free will — and the consequences of that choice are eternal.
"You must be born again," Jesus told Nicodemus — and tells us still. It's the only way our relationship with God can be restored.
The Bible shows a clear pathway to spiritual rebirth:
You don't need special language or a memorized prayer. God is listening to your heart.
You can tell Him:
When you do, God promises to make you new from the inside out.
This is exactly what I experienced — a new heart, new purpose, and new destiny. My life shifted from being self-centered to Christ-centered. I found joy in Scripture, fellowship with other believers, and a new identity rooted in God's love.
No longer a wandering soul, I entered the steady orbit of life with Christ.
